So were newer to the swine scene and are learning like eveyone else did. But Here's my question we bought locally from a very tiny farm and saved considerable on piglets for our two kids 9-11. When we saw what others in thier 4h group were getting at 3x's the money we were very pleased. One was very comparible as other was a little smaller This being said do we even stand a chance at the fair being newbies and pigs coming from a virtual unknown breeder ?

Feed schedule, clean water, good cover, clean pen, wormer every 30days, We are doing everything we can to give them a chance but feel it may be all for not.

I wouldn't worry about where you bought your pigs from, as long as it wasn't from the stockyards or from someone that you thought was screwing you over. From experience I've had more of those cheaper pigs turn out than the high priced ones. It sounds like your on the right track.

1st of all, PLEASE tell your kids good luck from us.

As long as your kids work with them and get them bomb proof.....where they (pigs) can stand the noise, being washed and you all met weight you've made it, learn from this year and next will be even better. Like our son says "When everyone gets to the show and comes back in great health, I made it."

Man....I remember when we had to drive 3 plus hrs to get the color of pig our son wanted and look at him now breeding his own to get what he WANTS.

A high priced pig isn't always the best a really good pig at 50 lbs may not be so great at 250 lbs. It's just like everything else you will pay more for a name that is attached to the pig like any other product out there with a name attached to it. We have 4 gilts and have $300 invested so its not always about the most expensive its all about your kids learning a life long lesson of responsibility rather than greed and bad sportsmanship.
