The Pietrain is known for the evolution of several breeds and crosses and also for the stress gene. This breed has its pros and cons if you want to learn more go to http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/swine/ it has what you want to know about the breed itself.

Pietrain hit the showpigs in the mid and late 90's as a way to add extreme amounts of muscle to show hogs. alot of the exotics in studs today have the pietrain line in them down in theyre pedigree and they are responcible for the majority of the stress gene in hogs today.

Not just exotics, the pietrain can be traced back to the 50s and some of the newer recognized "PURE BREEDS" can be traced to at one point or another having the peitrain gene this including the landrace. The only breeds that I have read as being excluded have been the pure bred hamps and yorks.

My guess is it was introduced to hogs to produce more lean meat on hogs back then for the butchers to get more out of theyre cuts.

They are slow growing as a pure breed so that might be something you might have to consider. Only good to cross. My personal opinion try to stay stress free as much as possible unless if you really beleive he would be the right choice for your herd.

If you are willing to risk with a stress carrier my recommendation would be Detox he has sired some nice looking hogs.
