Pine shavings. We tried straw one year and had a ton of trouble cleaning that out. It will solidify really quickly.

I was told not to use pine shavings because of the fine dust that could cause eye problems as well as breathing problems.

straw is good for wormth but if you have a heat lamp or mat try to stay away its too much work to clean. And everything everyone says is true my pigs seemed to get allergies from all the dust.

We bed them deep and clean out once a week depending on the weather. Since we've been getting a lot of rain I go and stick my hand in the hay every day and adjust as needed.

One good thing about pine shavings is that the dirty it gets the darker brown it gets. The only place that gets shavings is in the chicken coop and it gets replaced every three months with a bag being added each month, depending on how much the chickens scratch out of the coop.
