Teaser boars should be productive between 5 and 6 months of age. One key component to a teaser boar, is to make him look and smell like a boar. Boars admit key pheromones as a result of chewing and secreting saliva. The saliva carries the pheromones. When the detection process begins, the boar and gilt/sow get nose to nose or nose to vulva, detection occurs. When detection occurs the pheromones trigger the release of the females oxytocin, this alerts the female to contractions of the uterus, and standing period. This is the point where you determine that you have a boar, with good detection skills. Make sure your teaser boar also maintains good size, weight, and odor. Remember if you trust the boar, and have good practices with him, he will trust you also. This is critical in good production methods.
