Safe Gaurd can be used on pregnant sows ... right?

Safe guard 0.5% Fenbendazole alfalfa based pellets can be used on pregnant sows, that’s what I’ve always used on my sows while they are pregnant. It works really well.

can this be used at anytime throughout their gestation period or should it be avoided at any particular time?

I wouldn’t give them any dewormer one week prior to farrowing I always give my sows and gilts a shot of ivomec 2-3 weeks prior to farrowing, ivomec will take care of internal and external parasites.

I want to dispute something that RGV has said. We have worked with Dr. Dale Hendrickson with Stoney Creek Vet Services in IN and he recommends giving Ivomec 5-10 days pre-farrowing.

Tkf a lot of breeders deworm their hogs differently, when I bought my first breeding gilts I had the same question so I called the breeder I bought them from Charles (chuck) Real from Real hog farms. He told me that he wouldn’t recommend giving them the dewormer one to two weeks prior to farrowing never asked him why but I should. He’s been breeding show and commercial hogs for more that 45 years and also being a swine judge that with his experience I would just do as he recommended. I also read an article by Glenn Selk the Extension animal reproduction specialist from Oklahoma state university that also recommends deworming your sows or gilts two to three weeks prior to farrowing. I will try to find this article and post it the link; it is really helpful for breeders that are just starting.

A full dose of .27% Ivomec. You can use alternatives such as Dectomax plus now that the patent has run out on Ivomec there are generic forms available as well to save some cash.

Yes, breeders do things differently. That is why when I look for advice on swine health issues I turn to my veterinarian. Many times we will even get multiple opinions from the three vets we have access to so we can be sure that we are doing the right thing. Fortunately, in my opinion, we have access to some of the best in the business.

We use Safeguard EZ scoop on our sows as we put them in the farrowing crate and feed it for the 3 day period. Just remember that the scoop is meant to treat a 400# sow so don't under dose it.
